Looking for a new babysitter.. daddy is fired!

Not that daddy is really a babysitter but he does watch me on the weekends when mommy goes to the grocery store... It seems like we always get into a little bit of trouble once mommy leaves. I really think that daddy just has a secret passion to be a hairdresser but I won't dare tell him that right now. So this is what happened on Saturday while mommy was away.....

Daddy text mommy and sent this picture and the text that said:
"Damn that light socket hurt"

I am not sure if mommy believed us but sure enough she was home in 10 minutes after that.. I guess that is a good way for daddy to get mommy out of the stores spending money:)

Today mommy and I had a mini photo shoot while I had my cute new coat on that Meme and Papa got me for Christmas... AND mommy has discovered that my hair is long enough for a bow but it only stays in for about 30 seconds because my hair is so thin. Mommy keeps telling me to sit still and I can't understand why but now I realize it's because she wants my girlie bow to stay in...

Here I am sitting on my front porch... checking out the cars going by...
"Ok mommy one smile and one smile only"
Hi mommy...
And a view of my teeth (if you look close)

Daddy's little girl...

Every night after 5:30pm mommy and I get all excited because we know that daddy is going to be home soon. It never fails but as soon as I see my daddy I get the biggest smile on my face. Today mommy caught this on camera!!!

My journey to find sleep!

Why you ask is Avery not blogging today? Well that's because she is napping right now in her crib. Yes napping something which just 2 short weeks ago she was not doing on her own. So I have decided to document my journey or should I say my struggles as a first time mommy and working out our 'sleep problems'. So I apologize now for those of you that will be bored with this..Just stop reading now and come back in a few days and I will have some new pictures.

Most of what I read today online, in blogs, and in magazines from parents are all the questions and concerns they have with their children sleeping. I don't think that I truly knew what everyone meant when they would tell me 2-3 times a day back in early August that I needed to "get some sleep now because I may never sleep again". So correct they were. In the last 6 1/2 months mommy has yet to sleep the entire night without waking up and that is not because we have a horrible sleeper on our hands. I like to call it 'a mothers duty'. A mothers duty to be a light sleeper for the rest of her life waiting for that whimper on the monitor or that twist in her sleep that wakes her up or later on in life waiting for her to come home late at night. In fact, Avery has been a great sleeper at night. At about 4 1/2 months she dropped her nighttime feeding and began sleeping 10 hours at night. What a blessing but as a mother I think you always want more. More sleep, more naps....and the list goes on...... So that leads me to where we are today..

It would be silly to think that this sleep journey was just mommy being a fabulous mom and knowing all the right things to do. No actually I have spent hours and hours reading books, asking for advice and emailing good friends who have kids. What I do know and have known all along is that I have a very FLEXIBLE, HAPPY and CONTENT baby and for that I am blessed.

Avery spent the first 5-6 months of her life moving.... Moving from Arkansas, moving to Buffalo Grove and finally moving to Arlington Heights. It was a lot for one little girl to handle but as I expected she did much better than mommy or daddy with all the changes. Avery was napping in her mommy and daddy's bed for naps (yes hard to admit) for those first 5-6 months. We would lay down with her and the comfort of having mommy and daddy next to her would 'knock' her out very quickly. It was a great bonding time. She was napping and we were happy. But once we moved into our own house that just was a little too 'dysfunctional' for me so I decided to try putting her down in her crib for naps. First of all I had to figure out when I was going to put her down. In the past it was just whenever she looked tired. So after some talking to friends I decided that 9am and 1pm would be the best time to try this. Avery and I went straight to the bookstore and bought a book that was highly recommended and off we went. Mommy now had some tools to use. We used the book titled Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby. The title was great. What mother doesn't want her child to have healthy sleep habits and be happy?

Overall, the book made me understand the sleep process a little better. The more sleep your child is getting the easier it is for naps. I was one of those moms that thought I would just wear her out and stretch her to her limit and she would be zonked out and sleep for hours. WRONG! The most important and first thing we did with Avery was push up her bed time because in the book it said she would begin to sleep longer in the morning. I always wanted to put her to bed later so she would sleep later. Avery was going to bed between 7:30-8:00 every night and one night we decided to try her at 7:00pm instead and sure enough she was out like a light and now was sleeping 11 hours at night and getting up between 6-6:30am. The next was to tackle the naps remembering that the more rested she was the easier it would be to get her to nap.

The first couple of days were rough. She did not want to nap in her bed and she would tell mommy this by crying and screaming and of course I wanted to run in and 'save her'. It was pure torture for me and I decided that letting her cry it out for 30 minutes was my limit!! For the first couple times she would get so upset that she would actually have diarrhea. I had to question myself a million times at this point but I pushed on. And it kept getting easier but not without some tears for mommy too. The morning nap came first with tears but it came and sadly lasted only for 30 minutes and she was up crying again. What a disappointment. The afternoon nap often was spent screaming for the full 30 minutes and then we would go in and get her. Failed for the day.
The crying at the beginning got less and less as the days went on....

And I am happy to say that week 2 we have had 2 full naps each at least 1 hour and 15 minutes in length and the beauty of this is that the crying has stopped when I leave the room. It works!!!I am not naive to think we have fixed things for good but I do know that we have a great start!!!! We have a happy baby that is getting her naps in and a happy mommy and daddy. We have a routine and Avery knows what to expect. It is probably the hardest thing I have ever had to do yet in her short life. I am sure there will be a million harder things that come up(Geoff and I were just saying last night what are we going to do when she leaves us to go to college:(?) but we know that is the beauty of being parents. For us we are very happy with our routine and Avery is a happy baby and now with a little more sleep in her crib!! We feel blessed to have such a great baby because I so believe she has had to work the hardest!! Thank you Avery Grace for bringing naps to the Sherman household:)! We love you!!!!!

I love bath time!!

Bath time has always been a favorite activity for Avery. At night when we bring her up to the bathroom and turn on the water she gets all excited and smiles and kicks around. Tonight we decided to try her out in her big girl bath seat. And the verdict was SHE LOVED IT. She especially liked all the freedom she had to move around and grab at all her bath toys. And guess where they always end up????

Thanks Aunt Judy for my great bath seat. Mommy said this was a shower present from you. Good choice:)

Gotta have something to chew on at all times...including the letter C tonight!!!
And I like to sit back and relax too while mommy or daddy rub a dub dubs me down .....

Wow.... look at the changes..

Today Avery and I went on our first walk around our new neighborhood. It was a little warmer out and sunny so off we went. We both really needed some fresh air. I took some pictures and then I wanted to compare to another picture that I took while we were still living in Arkansas... So here goes...

What is all the hype about this show called The Bachelor???

"So I know my mommy loves this show called The Bachelor so I decided to take it into my own hands and read up on all the gossip of the show... I heard that Vienna wins over Jake's heart. I better read more to find out......"

"Yep, it's true. Vienna was a Hooters girl and has fake boobies(according to this article)"
" For my first birthday I may just have to ask for a subscription to this magazine. It is pretty good!"

So this is what happens when daddy is in charge...

On Monday nights it is daddy's night of getting me all ready for bed which includes a bath and a bottle.... Mommy likes to watch this show called The Bachelor which starts at 7:00pm so daddy gets me all ready for bed.
But last night this is what happened when we had a few extra minutes alone....

"daddy is my hair all ready for pictures?"

"oh daddy! mommy is not going to like my new Mohawk"
(this is when mommy walked in)
"oh no mommy... daddy and I are sorry for playing hairdresser but what do you think? Does daddy have a chance at a career in hair?"

Now I'm ready to shop till I drop!!

Today mommy and daddy and I had some shopping to do. First up was Target. Mommy thought maybe it was time to get out my shopping cart cover and try it instead of lugging me around in my carseat. Recently mommy noticed that I like to lift my head up from the carseat and try and look around when we go shopping. Now I don't have to do that!!! I had so much fun sitting up like a big girl!!
"Alright I am all ready. Let's get shopping"

My 6 month stats!!

Today I went to the doctors for my 6 month appointment. I had to get 4 shots in my legs and 1 orally. I was not very happy about it but mommy was there after to give me some hugs and kisses and I survived. I am now jumping around like a crazy girl in my jumperoo so I have already forgotten about those shots!!!

So hear it is:

weight: 14 pounds .5 ounce--------15th percentile

height: 27 inches---------90th percentile

head: 42cm------25th percentile

All looks great. I am meeting all my milestones and the doctor said for a little girl I was sure a strong one!! Next appointment for me will be at 9 months!

One at a time...

So if you saw a pile of toys like this laying on the ground.. What would you think?? Hmmmm.... Well the story goes like this....

"So many toys so little time!"

" So I think I will throw them all on the ground one at time"

"Yep! Now this is fun!"

Thought we would share Avery's new thing to do while playing.... She likes to take her toys and throw them down and watch them fall. She will drop just about anything she can get her hands on... Won't be long and she and Trixie will be the best of friends because I am guessing she is going to be dropping all that food off the highchair too!!!

My first superbowl!!!

So the Superbowl I heard is a day filled with lots of football, food and friends. Well my first game was spent with mommy, daddy and my Papa came to visit. Mommy made some chicken wings and mozzarella sticks but daddy ate them so fast I couldn't get my hands on any of that stuff. But what I did get my hands on were some yummy chips!! I didn't want to mention it to Papa but I think his glasses must not be working these days... I took those chips right from under his two eyes!!

"well let me see if Papa will notice"
"nope guess not... I think I got 2 or 3 chips this time"

"Papa got any salsa with these?"
Happy Superbowl Everyone!!

My new room!!

Well here it is..... my new room in my new house. Mommy said this was the first and only room that is all done. I think she said she still has to hang my fairies from the ceiling but that is about it! I like my room and I am starting to get adjusted to it but the first couple of nights I had a hard time sleeping in there by myself. I also have my first cold so that didn't help either.

My first time in my highchair!!

Well we all survived our big move into our house. Thanks to Meme, Papa, Aunt Laura, Uncle Jay and my cousins Justin and Jack who helped us get all settled. We are loving it already and starting to get settled with all of our stuff. One of the first things I got to finally try out was my highchair. Meme fed me some of my very favorites, carrots. I like my highchair and feel like a big girl!!
